Once you have identified the clutter in the various areas of your life; mind, body, spirit/soul, behavior and home, that it’s time for you to be rid of (Part 1 of this post gives examples) you will create an action plan with a timeline to achieve this. For physical clutter, for example, I suggest a schedule that outlines goals and when you will work on clearing (you will need to break this into chunks).
If it’s related to your body or spirit you also need a plan. For example I am currently doing a “BODY-MIND-SPIRIT CLEANSE” through the Jobri Center for Integrative Health in which I am letting go of certain toxic foods and adding more healthy food into my diet. This cleanse, as the name suggests, also focuses on letting go of the negative stuff we harbour in our minds and spirits.
While I am also engaged in de-cluttering my space right now i.e. purging files of old papers etc., this blog post is really more about shedding negative and self limiting beliefs and attitudes. Remember Shakti Gawain’s definition of clearing; letting go of false constricting beliefs and patterns and replacing them with positive supportive ones.
1) Make a list of all negative beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that you hold e.g. low self esteem, jealousy, comparing yourself to others.
2) On another piece of paper write down positive beliefs to replace these. Turn them into affirmations where you are able e.g. “I love myself exactly as I am.”
3) Create an ideal scenario of who you wish to be, include how you will feel, what you will believe and how you will act. Don’t sensor yourself. This is your ideal, make it grand and beautiful! This must be written in the affirmative and present tense. e.g. “I am confident in my abilities. I feel full of joy as I share my gifts and talents with others.” versus “I will be confident in my abilities. I will feel joy when I stop hiding my gifts and talents from others.” Do you see the difference?
4) Take the list you made of negative stuff and burn it, bury it or place it in a G*d/G*ddess/Higher Power Box to have it removed (see video for further instruction).
5) Take your ideal scenario and either put it where you can see it, place in your vision book, or put it in your G*d/G*ddess/Higher Power Box.
6) You can always say some prayers to help you with this. It’s really personal and you should trust your intuition. If you need help with prayers I recommend Marianne Williamson’s “Illuminata: A Return to Prayer”
7) Feel free to get creative with any aspect of the above exercise (s). If you need some help feel free to drop me a lineand as always your comments on this post are welcome.

Spring is a perfect time to do some clearing; letting go of false constricting beliefs and patterns and replacing them with positive supportive ones (Gawain, Shakti 1995). While we often associate Spring with a time of rebirth and new growth we don’t often reflect on the fact that we must clear out what is “dead” or no longer of use to us to make room for this new growth. Think of your garden for example where you clean up and prune out dead branches etc. to make room for new growth and to make a healthier bush or lawn.
What is it time for you to shed, let go of and clear?
Consider the areas of our lives; mind, body, spirit/soul, behavior and our homes. Below are some examples of things you may wish to rid yourself of.
Mind: negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, unkind thoughts about self and others.
Body: toxins such as alcohol or cigarettes, stress, foods that aren’t good for you like excessive fat, sugar/carbs,
Spirit/Soul: character defects like hate anger, jealousy, or selfishness, ego, and low self esteem.
Behaviors: procrastination, unkind behavior, laziness, acting out, addictive behaviors (including workaholism and constant worry), Obsessive compulsive behavior and pushing yourself too hard.
Home/Physical Environment: clutter, junk old stuff you don’t need or use, dirt or negative people and relationships, financial wreckage, debt, and unpaid bills.
Success Coaching Exercise: Once you have identified the things it’s time to clear out of your life make a list. You may want to use the suggested categories above or make your own. Reflect on those that you wish to tackle this Spring and jot down 1-3 actions you commit to taking to begin the clearing. For example if you decide it’s time to rid yourself of negative thoughts about yourself, for actions you might list 1) write down these thoughts and burn or bury them, 2) create a few positive affirmations to counter these negative thoughts.
Don’t try and tackle your whole list at once! After you do the above exercise come back next week to get some tips on what to do next with this list and first draft of your action plan.
If you want a bit more help with clearing and cleaning up the “old stuff” standing in the way of your success or are interested in other tools to aid you on your heroine’s quest feel free to drop me a line or click Services to learn more about the therapy and success coaching services I offer through Vision Quest Retreats.

Me & Alianna at a Vision Quest Retreats Event
What is a Heroine’s Quest? -By Alianna J. Maren, Ph.D.
Dorothy, when she went to the Land of Oz, was on a Heroine’s Quest. So was Lyra in The Golden Compass. So was Sarah in the movie Labyrinth. We enter into a Heroine’s Quest when we leave the safety and comfort of our mother’s home, and our father’s protection, and venture forth on our own.
We can begin a Heroine’s Quest at any time in our life. Taking on a challenging graduate degree program is a form of Questing. So would be joining any branch of the Armed Services, or even joining the Peace Corps. While these typify the Heroic Quests of the young woman, we also can start new Quests as mature adults. If we leave the safety of an established job to start our own business, we are Questing. Even if we begin a new venture within our existing company – if we introduce a new program or launch a new marketing campaign of our own design, we have some sort of Quest happening.
Unveiling: The inner journey
Questing is when we leave the known and safe confines of what has defined our lives up until now. This is how we go from being a “Princess” to being both “King” and “Queen” in our own lives. And as shown in the recent book, Unveiling: The Inner Journeyby Alay’nya (the nom de plume for Alianna Maren), we need both the “King” or “Emperor” aspect (building structures, having well-defined plans and objectives) and the “Queen” or “Empress” aspect (nurturing and care-taking) as healthy adults.
When we begin Questing, we don psychological armor and venture forth. We access our inner Warrior mode. This is an important and validating stage. However, it is also a transition stage. As we progress, we need to learn to relinquish the ego-validation of Questing and the thrill of being a Warrior, and move on to the more established and grounded roles that come with governing and nurturing our new kingdom.
Many Paths, Many Feet: An anthology of women’s stories
Dr. Cutts, in her short story Book I of The Adventures of Princess Isabelle: The embryo goddess and the morho, in Many Paths, Many Feet, uses Princess Isabelle as a figurative character depicting her own Quest initiation.
