Tamika and Friends, Inc. Launch Party-Duke's City on Historic U Street, NW | |||||||
After being diagnosed with advanced Cervical Cancer at the age of 25, and having to undergo a Radical Hysterectomy, Tamika Felder founded Tamika and Friends, Inc., a national non profit organization. The mission of Tamika and Friends is to raise awareness about cervical cancer and its link to the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is considered to be the most common STD in the United States. Some studies estimate that 85% of the sexually active population is exposed to at least one or more types of HPV. Because HPV is so prevalent, a person need not have multiple sexual partners to contract this virus. On June 25, 2005, Tamika hosted a party at Duke's City in Washington, D.C., to officially launch Tamika and Friends, Inc. and to celebrate her 30th birthday. Sharon Burton of Authentic Art Consultants presented Tamika with one of my original pieces, entitled Ascension to commemorate the event.
